Swimming Lessons

Perch - Parent/Child Swim Lessons

6 months to 5 years old - parent participates in the water with the child. Provides experiences & activities that help child feel more comfortable in the water, explore buoyancy, and learn safety.

All children not yet toilet trained must wear a waterproof swim diaper while in public pools.

Beginning Swimmers

Ages 3 – 5 years - designed for the beginning independent swimmer.

*Children must be of appropriate age on the first day of class to register.

All 3 year olds new must register for Kipper or Perch.

Kipper/Transition from Parent-Child to Preschool: (3 year old only) - Water Acclimation - Transition from parent/child class into independent learning environment. Provides very basic water skills combined with structured play. (No testing, must be 4 years old to advance)

Pike/Level 1 Preschool: (4-5 year old) – Water Exploration – Uses a 2 bubble. Blowing bubbles, going under water, jumping in with assistance, back float, front float with face in water and learning to paddle on front and back without assistance.

Eel/Level 2 Preschool: (4-5 year old) – Primary Skills – May wear a 2 bubble and has passed Pike. Holding float positions, going underwater with rhythmic and jumping in without assistance, treading water, paddle on front and back and side, sitting dive, graduating to one bubble.

Ray/Level 3 Preschool: (4-5 year old) – Stroke Readiness – May use only a 1 bubble and has passed Eel. Glide underwater, retrieve object from 3 feet, jump into deep water, treading water, kneeling dive, front crawl with rhythmic breathing, back crawl and elementary backstroke.

Progressive Independent Swimmers

Ages 6 and up

*In order for children to advance to the next level and sign up for that level they must pass all requirements for the previous level. Goggles are recommended for all levels!

Polliwog/Level 1: (ages 6 and up) - Primary Skills - May wear a 2 bubble.  Float positions, tread water, glide underwater, going underwater and jumping in without assistance, paddle on front and back and elementary backstroke.

Guppy/Level 2: (ages 6 and up) - Stroke Readiness - May use only a 1 bubble and has passed Polliwog.  Holding float positions, retrieve object from 3 feet, jump into water, treading water, sitting dive, rotary breathing, sitting dive, paddle on front and back and elementary backstroke.  Introduce front and back crawl.

Minnow/Level 3: (ages 6 and up) - Stroke Development - Must have passed Guppy and swim without a bubble.  Glide underwater, retrieve object from 6 feet, jump into deep water, treading water, kneeling dive, rotary breathing, front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, sidestroke and breaststroke. (Must be 7 years old to advance)

Fish/Level 4: (ages 7 and up) - Stroke Refinement – Must have passed Minnow. Front and back crawls at increased distances, sidestroke, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, underwater swim, treading water, standing dive and feet first surface dive, streamline and open turn.

Flying Fish/Level5: (ages 7 and up) – Stroke Endurance I – Must have passed Fish.  Front and back crawls, sidestroke, breaststroke, elementary backstroke at increased distances, butterfly, flip turn, treading water, and head first surface dive to retrieve object.

Shark/Level 6: (ages 7 and up) – Stroke Endurance II – Must have passed Flying Fish.  Front and back crawls, sidestroke, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, butterfly at increased distances, flip turn, treading water, racing start and head first surface dive to retrieve object.
